Earth Day Grounding Practice
In England, Tuesday, 21st April 2026, is Earth Day, giving us an opportunity to celebrate and connect with our Mother Earth through a Grounding Practice.
It is often still too cold to stand barefoot on the Earth in England during spring, yet it is essential that we remain grounded for the optimal functioning of body, mind, and Spirit.
Modern life pulls us away from the natural world. We spend our days in shoes, on hard floors, surrounded by buildings, screens, and electrical devices. Over time, this can leave us feeling scattered, tired, anxious, emotionally overloaded, and disconnected from ourselves.
Grounding offers a simple and powerful way to return.
Why grounding matters
Grounding, also known as earthing, is the practice of reconnecting with the Earth. In warmer weather, this can be done by standing or walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand. Even a short time in direct contact with the Earth can help restore a sense of calm, steadiness, and wellbeing.
Grounding supports the body by helping to calm the nervous system and reduce stress. It can improve mood, support better sleep, and create a greater sense of balance. But grounding is not only physical. It is also emotional, energetic, and spiritual.
When we are ungrounded, we may feel mentally overactive, emotionally reactive, or unable to settle. We may struggle to stay present. We may feel disconnected from our bodies, from the Earth, and from our own inner knowing.
To be grounded is to be here. To be in the body. To be connected to the present moment. It is to feel supported by the Earth beneath us and able to meet life from a place of greater stability and clarity.
For those on a spiritual path, grounding is especially important. It helps us embody spiritual insight rather than drifting into fantasy, overwhelm, or dissociation. It allows intuition to become rooted in real life. Spirit moves more clearly through us when we are fully present in the body.
Grounding indoors in spring
During the English spring, the ground can still feel too cold for bare feet. But we do not have to wait for summer to reconnect.
We can maintain our connection with the Earth through a simple daily indoor practice. The body responds to attention, breath, intention, and physical contact with the floor beneath us. By bringing awareness into the feet and legs, we begin to restore a felt sense of support and connection.
Even indoors, we are not separate from the Earth. Beneath the floor, beneath the foundations of the building, beneath the roads and pavements, the Earth is still there, holding us.
Grounding Indoor Exercise
- Sit comfortably on a chair and place your feet on the ground. If a chair is unavailable, you can also do this standing up.
- Close your eyes, or keep them open, whatever makes you feel most comfortable.
- Notice how your feet feel where they meet the floor. Begin to press each toe into the ground, one at a time, for several seconds.
- As you do this, feel the resistance beneath you. Become aware of the floor, the foundation of the building, the soil below it, and the pull of the Earth’s gravity.
- Once you have finished with your toes, repeat the same process with the heels of your feet.
- For even more grounding, bring your awareness to your ankles and legs. Notice how your muscles shift and engage as you press down into the ground beneath you.
- Breathe slowly and deeply. As you breathe out, imagine stress, excess thoughts, or energetic heaviness draining down into the Earth.
- As you breathe in, imagine steadiness, calm, and support rising up from the Earth into your body.
- Feel roots extend down from the souls of your feet into the centre of the Earth.
- Pull up the energy and send away any negativity.
- Be aware of the flow of energy.
- Stay with the practice for a few moments and notice how you feel.
A simple return
This is a small practice, but it can have a powerful effect. It helps bring us back into the body, back into the moment, and back into relationship with the living Earth.
Grounding does not need to be complicated. It is a return to something ancient, natural, and freely available to us. In a world that constantly pulls us upwards into thought, activity, and overstimulation, grounding brings us back down into presence, truth, and belonging.
And when warmer days arrive, we can deepen this connection further by stepping outside barefoot onto the grass, the soil, or the sand.
