Painting 2004-2009

About the Paintings 2004-2009

In contrast to the drawings these paintings are closer to the condition of drawing; made 'alla prima' they are executed in one sitting and employ the ground for tonal variation. With their fragile, fleeting, and spontaneous appearance the paintings explore the ambivalent nature of experience. The fluid language of thin washes and glazes evokes a diaphanous space that transcends the geometry of the real to create shifting, ambiguous space in which recognisable areas suddenly merge into painterly abstraction, placing the work between perception and representation. The sepia tone references early photography.
